Connect voltmeter red lead to negative (-) coil terminal (A) and black lead to engine ground. Turn key switch to RUN position. Turn flywheel slowly by hand. Voltage should fluctuate back and forth between battery voltage and 1 - 1.5 volts. Results: VOLTAGE DOES NOT SWITCH: Replace Ignition control module.
Solved. A friend of mine asked for my help fixing his John Deere Gator 850i and after doing some diagnostics I have come to the conclusion that it has no spark to either cylinder. I checked this by getting a test light and putting one end on the spark plug and one in the boot. The light did not flash or anything.I'd be surprised if your short grounded through and damaged the CDI box. PULL spark plug wires, ground circuit tester to battery neg., place other end of tester on the NEG. side of coil., Crank engine, tester should Flash. Now remove tester, install plug wires & mow until problem comes back. Serial number of the tractor is C314L 19146LM. Took the points off and cleaned them. They were a little pitted so I filed them down to take the pitting out. Regapped them a little under .020". Was able to get a little spark when touching a screwdriver across the points. Follow these steps: 1 Remove – Remove the plug wire (twist and pull) and remove the spark plug. You may need to remove some plastic engine covers. Check – Check the plug gap isn’t closed and the plug is clean. The later pics confirmed yours as a 1983 318 B43G machine. So, I have a 1986 B43G configured the same (with the newer replacement coil and external condenser).

Check battery voltage, 12.7, check voltage at starter wire, disconnected, 12.6. Jumped starter and still same slow cranking.Customer called and said her 318 stalled out and would not start again.
