Hmmmm, it sounds like the Cog railway is the clear winner. We saw the Royal Gorge from the top many years ago. It was the "Wine Express" trip on the RG train that caught my eye. Ya, we are winos! The seating is very tight. The new building up here is big, a new outdoor outlook, that is high up looking down, yikes!The ride up takes about an hour and down about 45 minutes. You get about an hour at the top to explore and visit the museum, gift shop and cafe. The train journey itself is a worthwhile experience. Very interesting and the brakeman (Tom in our case) gives you lots of information and background history.Both are fairly different, but equaly amazing. While on the Cog you get more of a bird's eye view, as the Peak is the highest point around, by far. On the Durango -Silverton you're more "in" the mountains, versus on the top. You also go along a scenic river for at least part of the journey. There is a narrow gauge partially cog railway from Brig (from Geneva you get on at Visp now) to Zermatt and another from the village up to Gornergrat. 22 replies to this topic. 1. Re: Diakopto to Kalavryta cog Railway. We travelled this line in 2010 - a unique experience. Return tickets were around €19, but we only rode as far as Zachlorou then walked back down the gorge. Later that day we drove to Kalavryta, which is well worth a visit.
The cog railway ride to the top is fantastic in itself as the gradients are steep and the views stunning. Once at the top there is a good choice of walks for all ability levels - or you can just sit and admire the view. There are the usual eating places and even a shop at the top!
