Mine was replaced at 40k miles under factory powertrain warranty at the dealership, only took a few hours. Yes it's safe to drive, you just won't have AWD while the light is on. Shouldn't affect the tranny though.

I googled it, thought it was an actuator cause I heard the common clicking.
